Oceanfront Cottage in Scenic 'Old Hawaii' - the Original Rainbow Dreams Cottage

Welcome to the Oceanfront Cottage in Scenic 'Old Hawaii' - the Original Rainbow Dreams Cottage, an idyllic vacation rental with breathtaking ocean views. Nestled on the picturesque Old Red Road (Rural Route 137) in the charming village of Opihikao, this retreat is remarkably close to the shimmering coastline.

Located along the stunning Puna Coast of the Big Island, the cottage is surrounded by a magnificent grove of coconut palms, offering direct vistas of the Pacific Ocean with panoramic 180-degree scenes framed by lush palms and native mahogany trees. The property features a tropical garden filled with over 100 coconut palms, exotic fruits, and the delightful scents of fragrant flowers, making it the prime rental choice in the area.

Inside this cozy abode, you will find a newly designed kitchen and bathroom adorned with tropical decor complemented by classic koa wood, mahogany, and bamboo furnishings. The cottage is fully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a well-stocked kitchen, one full bath, and an additional outdoor shower perfect for rinsing off after a day at the beach. With two bedrooms furnished with queen beds and generous closet space, you’ll feel right at home. Enjoy the gentle trade winds through windows in every room, and relax on the front porch or screened lanai as you soak in the warm tropical air.

Rainbow Dreams Cottage serves as your ideal eco-retreat, allowing you to truly disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Being fully solar-powered means you can enjoy alternative energy solutions, albeit with certain limitations. As the property is off-grid, you may experience limited cell service (2 bars) and no WiFi, enabling you to appreciate the unspoiled beauty and calming sounds of nature. For water needs, we utilize rain catchment; however, we recommend using bottled water or the complimentary water available from roadside taps in nearby Pahoa for cooking and drinking purposes. Full-grid services are conveniently located just minutes away.

With unobstructed ocean views right outside your door, you'll be tempted to spend your entire vacation mesmerized by the rolling waves. Yet, our cottage also makes for the perfect starting point to explore the unique landscapes and rich culture of the Big Island. The Puna District offers an array of attractions, from scenic parks to serene coves. Just three miles away lies the stunning Kehena Black Sand Beach, while MacKenzie State Park is only two miles in the opposite direction, featuring steep lava cliffs bordering a dramatic shoreline.

The largest town on the Big Island, Hilo, boasts a quaint Old Town filled with historic architecture, boutique shops, diverse dining options, and attractions such as Rainbow Falls, Banyan Drive, Lili'uokalani Gardens, and the famous “singing bridge” over the Wailuku River.

Don’t miss out on visiting the renowned Volcanoes National Park, a significant highlight of the island. The improved Saddle Road connects you between the majestic Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea mountains, providing a beautiful and convenient route for a scenic two-and-a-half-hour drive to the Kona side of the island.

Summary: This is a wonderful off the grid property away from all the hustle and bustle. The ocean views are spectacular. You can just wander a few hundred feet to enjoy the ocean and all the sea life. The grounds are well kept with an abundance of fresh fruit. The lack of Internet was a great reprieve from daily life. The unit is very well appointed with plenty of areas to relax and it has just enough modern conveniences.
