Cozy House near the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Volcano Village on 1 Acre

Discover your ideal retreat at this Cozy House near the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, located just a quick 5-minute drive from the park itself. Nestled on a spacious one-acre lot, you'll find a true home-away-from-home surrounded by the enchanting beauty of the Hawaiian landscape.

Experience restful sleep in the cool embrace of the high-elevation tropical forest, situated at an altitude of 3700 feet—no air conditioning needed! Enjoy the touch of high-quality sheets, warm blankets, and comforters, complemented by a wood-burning stove that warms the entire house on cooler evenings. The serene surroundings provide a peaceful atmosphere where you can listen to the delightful sounds of native Hawaiian birds.

Your expansive double lot boasts an array of native Ohia trees adorned with striking red blossoms and towering Hapu’u ferns that reach heights of up to 30 feet. For those seeking adventure, hike through the backyard until you reach the street behind—it's a great way to explore the nearby natural wonders. Don't forget to say hello to the friendly sheep next door, who will gladly nibble grass or weeds right from your hand. We often keep a bale of hay on hand for feeding them!

The entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is conveniently located less than three miles away, offering easy access to one of nature's most fascinating sites. If you're concerned about safety, rest assured that the town of Volcano lies upslope of the crater, making it a safer choice compared to many other areas on the island. Depending on volcanic activity, you may have the chance to view eruptions from various vantages around the Halemaumau Crater. The Visitor Center provides informative films and updates on current volcanic events, while the park features sulfur banks, steam vents, and a lava tube for exploration, along with a variety of hiking trails.

The charming town of Volcano is within a leisurely 10-minute walk and offers several markets, a gas station, a hardware store/grocery store, and even a post office. Treat yourself to meals at local favorites such as a Thai restaurant, the Lava Rock Cafe, or Kilauea Lodge Restaurant. Every Sunday morning, don't miss the farmer's market showcasing fresh produce, hot coffee, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches from 6:30 to 9 a.m.

If you're looking for stunning scenic drives, the Mauna Loa Scenic Road is nearby, where you can observe tree molds formed when lava flows solidified around damp tree trunks. More tree molds can be found at the start of the Napau Crater Trail, along with Kipuka Puaulu (Bird Park), which is just a 30-minute hike through ancient forests untouched by lava.

Golf enthusiasts will appreciate the Volcano Golf & Country Club, a mere 8 minutes away, renowned as the Big Island's oldest golf course dating back to the 1920s. Enjoy breathtaking mountain views and the possibility of spotting wild turkeys, Nene geese, and Hawaiian hawks during your round. The club also has rental clubs available and a restaurant for after-game refreshments.

Wine lovers can venture a mile beyond the golf course to the Volcano Winery, which features an intriguing selection of wines and tasting options—the Volcano Red comes highly recommended.

For those eager to explore further, an array of exotic sights awaits within a 30-45 minute drive. Visit the picturesque Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, well-known for its sea turtles that frequently swim and sunbathe nearby. Alternatively, discover the volcanically heated tide pools and witness a new black sand beach formed by the 2018 Kilauea eruption, which blocked the Pohoiki boat ramp. Don't overlook the beauty of Lava Tree State Park, filled with fascinating lava tree molds, or enjoy swimming and snorkeling along the Hilo coastline at Richardson’s Beach or Carl Smith beach park.

Hilo is just a half-hour drive away, featuring attractions such as the Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens with weekend petting zoo hours, the stunning Rainbow Falls, and the World Botanical Gardens, home to the magnificent triple-tiered Umauma Falls. Dive into local history at the Lyman Museum, showcasing Hawaiian geology, flora, fauna, and fish life, as well as the informative Pacific Tsunami Museum, all within a vibrant community full of dining and shopping experiences.

Please note that the property is equipped with exterior-only surveillance security cameras for your safety. Should you need to modify your reservation, a $50 change fee will apply for any adjustments initiated by guests.

Summary: Got in on a Friday evening and was greeted by the chirp of the smoke alarm in the master bedroom--the battery was dying. Even though the next day was a Saturday, the host had his handyman (who was a very nice fellow) arrive with ladder and a fresh battery. The house is in a very quiet neighborhood (the sheep next door sleep through the night and are charming during the day.)
