Faris' Forest | Cabin in Kurtistown

Discover Your Perfect Retreat at Faris' Forest in Hawaiian Acres, Hawaii
If you're seeking an authentic and affordable experience on the Big Island, look no further than Faris' Forest. Nestled on a picturesque homestead, this eco-tourist retreat spans three acres of serene Ohi'a forest, ideally situated between Volcano National Park, historic Pahoa, and vibrant Hilo.
Your stay will immerse you in a lush landscape filled with hundreds of plant varieties, ranging from exotic fruits like cacao and pineapple to an array of stunning orchids and tropical flora. This biophilic environment is designed to inspire and energize you, offering a unique connection to nature.
The accommodations feature a cozy 20' x 10' raised cabin accessible via stairs, complete with two covered decks for enjoying the tranquil surroundings. Inside, you'll find two full bunk beds, a small dining area that overlooks the yard, and a personal workspace equipped with a cooler for perishablesโperfect for stocking up on local goodies from Jhara General Store in Kurtistown. While we recommend bringing block ice for optimal freshness, we also offer freezer space and gallon jug ice upon request.
Although our off-grid cabin provides full electricity, we advise guests to avoid high-draw appliances such as coffee makers and curling irons. However, the shared commons area features a fully equipped kitchen where you can learn to embrace off-grid living through traditional cooking methods using Dutch ovens and cast iron cookware. Enjoy complimentary breakfast options, including homemade sourdough bread and local fruit or oatmeal and tea, served daily from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. (except Thursdays). Access to the commons extends from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
For your convenience, our full bathroom facilities are open 24/7 with an exterior entrance, separate from the commons. Itโs a short walk of about ten yards from the bunk bed bungalow to the commons, so please treat it with care, akin to a college dorm. Quiet hours are observed between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., but bathroom access remains available, albeit without hot water and light during those times.
As a working homestead, you'll encounter friendly animals like goats, chickens, and our beloved petsโfour sociable farm dogs, three cats, and two parrots. While we encourage meet-and-greets when we're around, please maintain a respectful distance from our goats and parrots. Our cabin typically accommodates two guests, but we can provide additional sleeping arrangements for larger groups if needed; just ask for details.
Getting here involves traveling along rustic country roads, which may be rocky for the last couple of blocks. Drive carefully, as road names can vary greatly. Weโll provide detailed travel instructions once your reservation is confirmed, ensuring smooth access to your getaway.
Explore nearby attractions, from the famed Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls to less-traveled spots like Kahena Black Sand Beach and the breathtaking lava flats. Donโt miss a chance to cool off in the refreshing waters of Hiloโs cold ponds, often frequented by gentle green sea turtles. For a warmer soak, the geothermal hot ponds formed after the 2018 eruptions promise a relaxing escape.
We kindly ask all guests to show respect for the land during your visitโthis principle, known as Malama Aina, is essential to us. As part of our commitment to creating a harmonious community, we ask prospective guests to share a brief reason for their travels upon booking, ensuring that our home is a suitable fit for everyone. We genuinely wish to host those who appreciate nature and the simple joys of rural life.
Please note that our mission transcends mere property management; it's rooted in land stewardship and education. Here, you become part of our ohana from the moment you book, and many guests return time and again because of this welcoming spirit. We pride ourselves on providing an affordable alternative to typical tourist accommodations, making it accessible for travelers seeking authentic experiences.
Thank you for understanding our approach to hosting, and we look forward to welcoming you into our unique way of life here at Faris' Forest. Mahalo for considering us as your next destination!
